W

Warp - The yarns running parallel to the selvage; in denim, it is dyed indigo.

Weaves - Type of weave of denim. Varies from coarse (3/1), Broken Twill (3/1, staggered), fine (1/1). Today's denim is only woven in one way: diagonally, towards the top right or left. All the other weaves are not denim fabric, even if they are dyed indigo. The current favourites are scrim fabrics like fabrics showing spun silk effects or structure.

Weft - Weft (or "filling" yarns) run from selvage to selvage; "the weft runs from the left". In denim this is generally left untreated, although tinted option are sometimes used to create an interesting cast.

Weights - The weight is measured in ounces (see "OZ"). The heaviest weighs 15 oz, the everyday 14 1/2 oz, followed by 13 3/4, and the new weights of 13 oz, 12 oz, 11 oz, 10 oz, then for Chambray 9 oz, 7 oz or 4 oz.

Western style jacket - The classic and authentic "basic jacket" that has inspired numerous variations.

Width - The usual width of denim: 150 cm; wide width: 160 cm; famous width: 75 cm

Women's Cut - Flattering shape highlighting curves. A market requirement generated by the demand of the purchaser who want jeans in which they feel good and look glamorous. The "Basic-Fits" also suits the feminine form small waist, round hips. Motifs and patterns embellish jeans wear for girls in many styles.

Worker - Heavy denims for manual workers, in extra large sizes, with practical details; any style is allowed provided that it is macho: miner, gold washer, track layer, etc.

X Dyes - For some fabrics, different warp and weft yarns are used (e.g. cotton and polyester) which capture different shades in the dye tank.


Y

Yarn - The material used to weave the cloth. The finer the yarn, the lighter and softer the fabric.

Yarn counts - Description of the thickness of the yarn. The denim industry works with English measurements. (N.E.).


Z

Zip - An alternative to buttons. The purists however, prefer buttons. Zips with stay pins are a marketing advantage for "jeans for girls".
