N
Natural - A Ring Denim quality made from Natural unequal weave and weft.
Nimes - The French town also claims to be the birth place of denim. It asserts that the name ‘denim’ is an abbreviation of "cloth from Nimes". In 1860, a certain cloth from Nimes was exported to the United States and was sent to a jeans brand.
O
Open end - A technically sophisticated spinning process (rotor; rapid production, low costs). The O.E. denim corresponds today to the standard quality. Ring Spun Denim gives the image of a uniform fabric.
Original - See "AUTHENTIC" and "LEGEND"
Outseam - Exterior stitching: the outside lapped seam, from the waist to the hemline.
Overdyed - There are many variations. Blue and black can be overdyed with bright contrasting colours to obtain special effects. The most current and successful forms of overdyeing consist of dyeing washed out indigo jeans with luminous colours.
OZ - Abbreviation of ‘ounce’. Denim is weighed in ounces to the square yard. One ounce corresponds to 28.45 g.
P
Packaging - The most effective marketing instrument, which determines the image of a product and gives it increased value: packaging is in fashionable styles, which emphasize the current trends. The preferred subjects for jeans are: the 50s, the "Campos" look, the "Western Trek" look, the "Tex-Mex-Ethnic" look, macho sports such as baseball, boxing, or motorcycling or even ecological commitment, surfing, and "City-Graffiti", high-tech design and, recently, the psychedelic effects flowing out of colours.
Patchwork - Patchwork jeans have been sewn either with pieces of recycled denim, or with off-cuts, embroidery or coloured decorations and have become models full of fantasy. Originally a "do-it-your-self" look, that is now marketed.
Pigments - Dyeing of pigments, surface dyed cloth which fades when washed.
Placed - The process of sandblasting (see "SANDED") applied only to certain surfaces like the hems, the knees, the edges of the pockets in order to obtain a worn effect.
Pocket stitching - The characteristic logo embroidered onto a back pocket.
Prints - Rarely used for authentic denim; the most popular designs are batik, two-tone flowers and mini-designs.
